Windows 11 Introduces AI Actions In File Explorer For Enhanced Productivity

Microsoft has begun testing a new AI-powered feature in File Explorer for Windows 11, aimed at streamlining common tasks such as summarizing documents and editing images. This functionality is currently being rolled out to users enrolled in the Windows Insider Program, specifically within the Dev and Beta channels.

The update is part of a broader initiative focused on integrating AI into the operating system, especially on new Copilot+ PCs. These AI Actions are being introduced gradually, with some features available for manual activation by advanced users who wish to try them early.

In File Explorer, right-clicking supported files now reveals AI-driven options. These include editing images, summarizing text documents, and even generating FAQs based on document content. The features are designed to integrate tools from Microsoft Copilot and apps like Paint and Photos more seamlessly into the user workflow.

AI Actions related to images support formats such as JPG, JPEG, and PNG. Users can apply effects like background blur, object removal, and background replacement using either the Photos or Paint apps, depending on the action.

Document-related features are also being enhanced. Users with OneDrive or SharePoint storage can benefit from AI tools such as document summarization, especially if they have a Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription. Supported formats include .docx, .pptx, and .pdf. Additionally, automatic Q&A generation is available for certain file types but requires a corporate account and is limited in availability.

For those wanting early access, the features can be manually enabled using the ViVeTool utility with feature IDs 54792954 and 55345819. However, Microsoft recommends waiting for the official rollout, expected in the coming weeks, to ensure stability and compatibility.

These AI enhancements are part of a larger update to Windows 11 that also includes improvements to the widgets panel, energy management, and advanced system settings. Microsoft’s push to embed intelligent features directly into the operating system reflects its broader strategy to enhance user productivity and integrate AI more deeply into everyday computing tasks.
