Google announced a series of major updates coming soon to Android Auto, revealed during its I/O 2025 event. The company aims to expand the functionality of its in-car platform by introducing new apps and features, including video streaming, web browsing, and enhanced weather applications. These improvements are designed to make Android Auto more useful, versatile, and aligned with the growing demand for connected car experiences.
Among the most notable additions is the upcoming video app, which will allow users to watch content directly on their vehicle’s infotainment screen. However, to maintain safety, video playback will only be available when the car is parked. The feature will also require a smartphone running Android 16 to be connected. Google has yet to confirm exactly which car models will support this feature, but compatibility is expected to be limited to vehicles with modern infotainment systems and Google Built-in integration.
Web browsing functionality is also expected to be added, further enhancing the system’s capabilities. While details about supported browsers or specific functions were not disclosed, the goal is to provide access to online content without relying solely on a phone.
In addition to media and browsing features, the Android Auto and Android Automotive platforms will officially receive a dedicated weather app. Although a weather app has existed in beta since early 2023, it was available only to select users. Now, with the beta phase concluded, developers are permitted to roll out weather apps in full production. This means that more users will soon have access to real-time weather updates directly from their car’s interface.
These updates reflect Google’s broader commitment to evolving Android Auto into a more complete in-car system, capable of addressing diverse needs while prioritizing safety. By integrating more features that were once limited to smartphones, the platform is moving toward offering a more seamless and connected driving experience.
The company has not shared an official launch date for these features, but the rollout is expected to occur sometime in 2025. As the automotive industry continues to embrace digital transformation, Android Auto’s expansion highlights the increasing importance of smart technology in modern vehicles.
