The upcoming Toxic Avenger reboot is months away, and each new glimpse of it has been either pretty goofy, gross, or both. Its newest promo falls into the third category—silly and bloody as all hell, and it’ll further fuel your distaste for the healthcare industry this year.
Seeing a doctor and getting the meds that keep you healthy (or at the very least, alive) can be a trying thing, even when the doctor actually wants to help. That’s not the case for Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage): years of being a janitor have left him sick with [jackhammer noise], and his only medical help lies in a super expensive medical treatment he might have to pay out of pocket for.
When he asks his boss (Kevin Bacon) for help, Winston is thrown into toxic waste. Miraculously, he survives, but comes out of it severely mutated. The only thing on his mind is reconnecting with his stepson Wade (Jacob Tremblay) and getting violent payback against his ex-employer, or anyone else who pisses him off.
Directed by Macon Blair, Toxic Avenger is a reboot of the original 1984 Trom classic. It’s taken a while for this to get released, and when we reviewed it back in 2023, we thought it was stupid and delightfully nasty. Two years later, it still looks exactly that, from the Adult Swim energy in the medical infomercial to the way a mutated Winston rips off a guy’s arm and the blood just gushes out. Looking forward to this when it hits theaters on August 29.
