This morning, Lucasfilm dropped our latest look at its next Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew–and if you hadn’t already gotten into your head that this is an adventure series in the vein of ’80s kids movies, well, this trailer really wants you to know.
Set to a Star Wars-y cover of Peter Schilling’s Major Tom, of all things, the new trailer is practically yelling its influences from the rooftops.
We don’t get all that much new in terms of what Skeleton Crew is going to be about that we didn’t know already–a ragtag group of kids, a discovered spaceship that leads them halfway across the galaxy with no idea how to get home, Jude Law showing up with a blaster and a dream to stop them all getting immediately vaporized by space pirates. But the new trailer goes a long way to sell you on that classic coming of age story, Goonies-esque influence that has been a touchstone for creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford ever since the show was announced. Hijinks ensue! Chases begin! Giant weird alien creatures and sinister (but charmingly goofy-looking) space pirates glower!
It’s all very fun looking, but time will tell if Skeleton Crew has more up its sleeve than vibes and synth soundtracks. After all, it is set around the era of The Mandalorian (season 3’s Nikto pirate Vane is a major figure in Skeleton Crew‘s cast of motley space-lubbers, we know that much at least), and if contemporary Star Wars loves one thing, it’s tying all its output together. With The Mandalorian & Grogu to come, maybe we’ll get some indicators of what’s to come here. But maybe we’re just in for a bit of family fun instead, and that’s pretty Star Wars in and of itself.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew hits Disney+ December 3.
